Description

Future First is a small education charity with big ambition: to see every state school and college in the UK - and every pupil - supported by a thriving alumni community who can help them. Half of the most persistently disadvantaged young people don’t know anyone in a job they want to do. For many, the only person they know who went to university is their teacher. We want to change this, using the power of relatable role models.

We work with schools to harness the power of their past pupils, their alumni, as inspirational speakers, relatable role models, governors, mentors, coaches and supporters, building a sustainable community network. Meaningful encounters with relatable role models build confidence that ‘someone like me can succeed’, motivation to study and engagement with school life. Working with employer partners enriches our programme, connecting young people with real opportunities, work experience, insights, mentors and events that can broaden their horizons and show them a world beyond their own experience.

Last year we worked with around 70,000 young people, over 300 schools and had nearly 270,000 volunteers signed up. We aim to be working with 25 percent of state secondary schools within three years, so we have a way to go. The onset of COVID-19 offered few positives for anyone working in education, but our increasing use of digital technology does provide new ways to safely connect students with people who can help them. We see real potential for further developing our technology, not just the connections and networks it can provide for students, but also the opportunity to build a national movement where the majority of state schools recognise the power of their alumni.

We are now seeking a new Chair to succeed Dame Christine Gilbert, who will be leaving her position after a successful nine-year tenure. As Chair, you will be committed to ensuring Future First fulfils its mission and vision, leading the Board of Trustees to ensure clear purpose and direction, provide support and challenge to the Chief Executive, enabling each trustee to deliver their duties successfully, and ensuring effective governance of the charity. You will have experience of operating at senior Board level, preferably in the role of Chair, alongside experience of high-level strategy development and implementation. Acting in partnership with the Chief Executive you will be a positive ambassador and figurehead of the charity.
